Jeans

idea

After it felt like everyone was sitting in the home office without pants in the Corona spring of 2020, I wondered what secondary use would be possible for all the superfluous clothing 😏 … The solution: use it as a flower box! 🌻 🌸 🌺

Implementation

Old jeans are used as the starting material for the “flower box”. I stapled together a small wooden box from old pallet wood, which serves as a base for the pants. Wooden slats are attached in the legs of the jeans, which are screwed to the box at the bottom. The trousers are stapled to the wooden slats so that they don’t slip down over time.

However, after the box and the pants were completely filled with potting soil, it turned out that this construction is not as stable as planned. Therefore, a flower grid had to be attached to the wooden box and the trousers as additional stabilization.

Then marigolds and daisies were sown in the bottom of the wooden box. A rank flower mixture was sown at the top of the trousers.

The result…

Something is growing… but not as luxuriantly as desired.

Unfortunately, the project was systematically sabotaged by slugs! (Probably out of envy, because they have nothing to wear… 😒) The marigolds and daisies below in the wooden box never survived for more than two days after the shoots were visible. Unfortunately nothing grew there! 😭

Only the nasturtium came up in the pants. One problem is that the soil in the pants dries out very quickly. It would probably have been better to put foil on the inside of the pants. This would reduce evaporation.

The nice thing about the nasturtium was that it kept producing new flowers for almost the whole summer! So the pants have changed again and again.

In winter, the pants don’t look that great… However, the weathering of the jeans fabric is slowly starting to set in. That looks very interesting too. That’s an extreme vintage look.

I think I will probably not be able to wear the jeans anymore. The risk of triggering a new trend is too great and what you can see then is certainly not always sexy! 😳 😲

Improvement ideas

  1. Make the wooden box sturdier, bigger and heavier to ensure the pants stand stable.
  2. Tape the wooden box once with a strip of copper foil to ward off the slugs. 👊 (if necessary with electric fence and self-firing systems! 💥)
  3. Wrap the inside of the jeans with foil to slow the soil drying out.
